At present, China's new energy storage industry is in a new stage of diversified and high-quality development. In the future, how to achieve high-quality and high-level upgrading of the industry has become a hot topic of common concern in the industry. At the 2024 China New Energy Storage Industry Innovation Alliance Annual Conference held recently, industry insiders conducted in-depth discussions on this issue.
New energy storage refers to energy storage technology that, in addition to pumped storage, mainly relies on the output of electricity. It is an important supporting technology for building a new type of power system with new energy as the main body. The 2024 China New Energy Storage Industry Innovation Alliance Annual Conference released the "China New Energy Storage Development Report 2024" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), which shows that as of the end of 2023, China has put into operation new energy storage projects with an average energy storage time of 2.1 hours, nearly 10 times the installed capacity at the end of the 13th Five Year Plan. The installed capacity of new energy storage has completed the planned goal two years ahead of schedule. Among them, the new installed capacity for the whole year of 2023 increased by about 260% compared to the end of 2022, and the scale of new energy storage installed capacity continued to grow rapidly.
The report points out that from the perspective of power supply and demand situation and future development of conventional power sources, strengthening the power supply system is a key task in building a new type of power system. New energy storage will become an important supplement to the construction of the power supply guarantee support system and an important means to promote the consumption of new energy in the near future. It is expected that long-term energy storage with a storage time of 4 hours or more will become the main force in the development of the energy storage industry in the future.
Wang Chengshan, an academician of the CAE Member, said that in the past year, China's new energy storage industry has flourished, the trend of technology diversification is obvious, policy support has increased, the market scale has expanded rapidly, and the ability to support the construction of new power systems has continued to increase. Next, we should strengthen technological innovation, promote industrial development, and pay attention to market demand.
Wang Chengshan said, "The innovation and application of new energy storage technologies require collaborative cooperation between the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain. We need to strengthen the synergy of the industrial chain, promote the deep integration of new energy storage technologies with industries such as wind and solar power generation and electric vehicles, and form a good situation of mutual promotion and common development. New energy storage needs to closely combine market demand, continuously develop diverse application scenarioses, promote innovative applications on the power generation side, grid side, and user side, and promote its diversified value."
Song Hailiang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of China Energy Construction Group Co., Ltd., stated that currently, new energy storage has entered a stage of diversified and high-quality development. He proposed four initiatives. "Firstly, we will strengthen innovation driven efforts and continuously promote the iterative upgrading of new energy storage technologies. Secondly, we will strengthen green and low-carbon efforts and continuously promote the construction of a green and environmentally friendly energy storage system. Thirdly, we will strengthen digital intelligence and continuously improve the integration and operational efficiency of new energy storage systems. Fourthly, we will strengthen sharing and integration, and continuously create new models of new energy storage, government enterprise linkage, and industrial cooperation."
Gao Jifan, Chairman of Tianhe Solar Energy Co., Ltd., believes that China's energy storage industry is currently facing safety and quality risks brought about by rapid development, relatively insufficient original technological innovation and intellectual property protection, and the need to improve collaborative innovation between the innovation chain and the industrial chain. In the new development situation, the energy storage industry requires a high-quality and high-level upgrade more than ever before. He suggested that in the future, not only should industry, academia, and research collaborate in innovation and industrial chain development, but also promote technological innovation, protect intellectual property rights, and eliminate vicious competition.
"Disordered and inefficient price competition will only increase the internal consumption of the industry. In order to promote the healthy development of the industry, it is recommended that everyone jointly promote the high-quality development initiative of the new energy storage industry, and from the perspective of promoting the healthy development of the industry, jointly create a healthy industrial ecology and a positive public opinion atmosphere. Actively explore and try new business models, stimulate industry vitality, improve the profitability of the energy storage industry, and create a more favorable market environment for the high-quality development of the industry." Gao Jifan said.
